“Patua ki waenganui o ye au ki Hikuragi. He toka whakairo e tu aka nei”
“Cleaving the twin peaks of Hikurangi. Where the carved rock emerges” - from Kura Tiwaka Taua, traditional Ngati Porou Haka.
Journey to the Maunga Hikurangi pou (whakairo, traditional carvings) by helicopter. Along the way enjoy breath-taking views of the lands, sea and sky once surveyed by ancient Ngati Porou chiefs.
Disembark at the pou and learn about Maori gods and legends, the mountain’s significance in New Zealand history and to the Ngati Porou people, as well as the meanings behind the traditional carvings – the largest standing at over 10 metres.
