DESCRIPTION

Greet the dawn, a world-first experience

Meet your Ngati Porou kaitiaki (guide) at Ruatoria before sunrise, and be 4WD transported to the sacred site of the majestic Hikurangi Maunga (mountain) carvings.  During the ascent an insight into the cultural splendour and magic of Hikurangi will be shared.

When the sunrise bubbles on the horizon, a hushed reverence is felt as the past snaps into the now and the nine pou (carvings) are bathed in the light of a brand new day.

A thanks giving karakia (ceremonial blessing) and oral delivery from the kaitiaki about each pou will be followed with a personal native tree planting exercise.

A taste of Ngati Porou produce and hot coffee is the perfect way to end this sun kissed adventure before returning back to reality.

Bookings are very hard to secure so always plan ahead. Due to the nature of the activity and the condition of the track to the Pou, tours will be cancelled if rain is forecast or there has been rain within the last 24 hours.

Meet your Ngati Porou kaitiaki (guide) at Pakihiroa Farm carpark at an agreed time and be 4WD transported to the sacred site of the majestic Hikurangi Maunga carvings.

During the ascent and at the site, authentic stories allowing an insight into the cultural splendour and magic of Hikurangi will be shared.

A thanks giving karakia (ceremonial blessing) and korero (oral delivery) from the kaitiaki about each pou will be followed with a personal native tree planting exercise.

Ngati Porou Tourism VIP Helicopter Experience

A fully customisable experience from Gisborne. Be flown by helicopter to the summit of Maunga Hikurangi from one of our exclusive overnight accommodations. Along the way enjoy the glorious sights of our Maui nation land, sea and sky.

Ngati Porou guides will give you an insight into the Ngati Porou history and culture, the cultural significance of the maunga and share their Maori legends and stories. A true cultural experience.

You will be guided around the nine whakairo (carvings) on Maunga Hikurangi, before sharing a light picnic showcasing local produce.

On the return trip we provide an opportunity to experience other areas of significance on the East Coast.

Marae stay then world first sun rise

Engage, embrace, experience – Ngati Porou culture, cuisine and hospitality as you enjoy a day and night on the marae.

We will arrange a meet at a local marae in Ruatoria where you will be traditionally welcomed and made a member of the marae stay whanau (family).

The afternoon can be spent engaging in various marae life activities which could include art and entertainment, hunting for and preparing dinner with your hosts and enjoying good food, great company and locally produced beverages.

You can sleep on the marae or your camper-van. The choice is yours.

The following morning you will link up with Te Urunga-tu - Sunrise Tour and then return to the marae for breakfast, before a poroporoaki (farewell) from the marae.

This experience is catered for groups hiking up Maunga Hikurangi and wanting to learn about our culture, our local stories and about our nine pou.

Bookings are very hard to secure so always plan ahead. We will accommodate any group size at our price up to 12 persons. For people staying overnight, only 8 people can occupy the hut.
