We meet for our Experiences outside Hati Nati Cafe, 163 Waiomatatini Rd, Ruatoria, 4032.

What do I need to KNow?

For TE URAUNGA-TU - Sunrise Experience and HARAMAI - Day Experience, please ensure you know what time you need to be at the Hati Nati Cafe, Ruatoria and be on time, the tour will not wait for you.

There are only composting/long-drop toilets available at the carvings.

Maunga tours will be cancelled via a telephone call if rain is forecast or there has been heavy rain in the last 24 hours. Our host will be in contact with you 3 days before the tour. If we have to cancel you will be offered a full refund.

Your safety is paramount, our guides are trained to cope with the worst case scenario, however taking part in this activity is at your own risk.

We have not had an issue with vehicle safety, however we do recommend you lock your vehicle and ensure valuables are out of sight when parking your vehicle in Ruatoria.

What Do I need to Bring?

You are going up a mountain therefore please ensure you have very warm clothes; it can be cold at the carvings even in the middle of summer.

Please ensure you have closed in shoes; sandals, jandals or flip flops are not appropriate.

Please ensure you bring sun protection.

Please ensure you bring water; we will provide some refreshments however the tours duration is 4 hours.

Important Notices

Te Runanganui O Ngati Porou in consultation with the Department of Conservation, wish to advise that public access to Maunga Hikurangi will be CLOSED from: 

12 noon on 31 December to 12 noon on 1 January each year for the Hikurangi Maunga Dawn Event.

1 October to 31 October each year due to farming operations (lambing season).

INformation for Hikers

The Te Ara ki Hikurangi track is located on Pahikiroa Station, which is at the end of the gravel Tapuaeroa Valley Road, 20 kilometres inland from Ruatoria.

  • The turnoff is on a bend (north of Ruatoria) and is signposted as 'Pakihiroa Station'.

  • There is public access from the Tapuaeroa Valley to the mountain, via Pakihiroa Station which is owned and operated by Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou. 

  • There is a public carpark on the left from the ‘Pakihiroa Station’ sign, before you travel over the bridge. There is no public vehicle access past this point.

Refunds

In the event we have to cancel a tour, a refund will be provided on the card which was used to purchase the tour. Refunds can take up to 2 weeks to be completed.
